The Virtual Controller (VC) in Aruba Access Points (APs) is a built-in management feature of Aruba Instant Access Points (IAPs). It allows one AP to act as a central management controller for a group of APs without requiring dedicated hardware or software controllers.
Key Features of the Virtual Controller
1./ Centralized Management:
- One AP in the network acts as the Virtual Controller, managing the configuration and operation of all the APs in the same Instant cluster.
- All changes made on the Virtual Controller are automatically propagated to the other APs in the cluster.
2./ Dynamic Role Assignment:
- The Virtual Controller role is not tied to a specific AP. If the current Virtual Controller fails, another AP in the cluster automatically takes over the role without disrupting service.
3./ Plug-and-Play Configuration:
- When new APs are added to the same subnet, they automatically join the existing Instant cluster and inherit the configuration from the Virtual Controller.
4./ Simplified Deployment:
- You can manage multiple APs without needing an external hardware controller, reducing costs and deployment complexity.
5./ Scalability:
- An Aruba Instant cluster can typically support up to 128 APs per Virtual Controller, depending on the model and firmware.
6./ Feature-Rich Management:
- Configure wireless SSIDs, VLANs, security policies, and RF settings through the Virtual Controller’s web interface or CLI.
- Monitor the status of APs, clients, and network performance.
7/ Integration with Aruba Central:
- The Virtual Controller can integrate with Aruba Central, Aruba’s cloud-based network management platform, for centralized management of multiple clusters across locations.
How It Works
- Initial Setup:
- The first Aruba Instant AP you set up in a network becomes the Virtual Controller.
- Cluster Formation:
- Additional APs in the same subnet detect the Virtual Controller and join the cluster.
- Management:
- All configurations are made through the Virtual Controller’s interface (web or CLI), which synchronizes settings to all APs in the cluster.
Benefits of the Virtual Controller
- Cost-Effective: Eliminates the need for a separate hardware controller.
- High Availability: Automatic failover ensures no single point of failure.
- Ease of Use: Simplifies the management of wireless networks, even for non-experts.
- Flexibility: Supports both small and medium-sized deployments.
If you’re managing an Aruba Instant network, the Virtual Controller is your go-to tool for quick and efficient network configuration and management.
